5 step SEO audit checklist

5 step SEO audit checklist

The world of SEO can be complicated and overwhelming, so of course we had to write a blog post to make your life a little easier. Below is a 5-step SEO Audit Checklist to help you find your SEO weaknesses and opportunities.

Check to see if your site is mobile-friendly

With 60% of Google searches coming from mobile devices, mobile SEO is more important than ever. To reflect this, Google has recently started using their Mobile-First Algorithm, meaning that Google will now crawl and index your web page based on how it renders on a mobile phone versus a desktop computer.

To reflect this change in algorithm, Google has now provided a tool for you to ensure your site is mobile friendly. Just plug your site link into Google’s Mobile-Friendly Testing Tool and it will tell you whether your site is optimized for mobile devices, and therefore more likely to rank higher on the Google results page.

Speed up your site

Another ranking factor Google uses is the site’s loading speed, and the 2018 update has made speed even more important.

To increase the speed of your site you first need to clean up your site’s HTML code. Using PageSpeed Insights you can easily find problems with your code, but make sure you are testing all popular pages from your site rather than just your homepage. You can also run a speed test which will tell you what elements of the website are slowing things down – webpagetest.org is a great tool for this. Finally, make sure you are compressing your site images.

Check your organic traffic

Checking your organic traffic is essential as it is targeted. Users visiting your site from organic results have a specific intent, and you could be providing them with the solution or answer, so they will be more likely to convert.

You can use Google Analytics to check your organic traffic, you’ll be able to see how many people visited your site from search engines over a given time period. If organic traffic is flat or declining, complete the steps on this blog…things should improve once you finish your SEO audit.

Identify Duplicate Content

Duplicate content on a site does not sit well with search engines, which means your site could incur penalties as a result, dramatically reducing your rankings. Although you may be unintentionally duplicating content, it’s important to understand the risk and keep it as minimal as possible to ensure you have the best possible chance of ranking.

Scan your Site for Any Errors

Having a lot of broken links can make your website difficult for search engines to crawl and difficult for users to navigate – both of which can affect your chances of ranking.  Difficulty navigating pages of your site will only lead to a user leaving, which could have been a potential conversion. Ensuring there are no broken sites or images within your site will ensure a smooth user experience, which we know will only increase your ranking.
